  31.                  Installation Instructions

  34. * Installation
  35.  
  36.    Netscape Navigator 3.03 is being distributed as both a 16-bit
  37.    Windows program and a 32-bit Windows program.  Both the 16-bit
  38.    and 32-bit versions of Netscape are shipped in a Premium
  39.    package that includes Plug-ins, and a Standard package that
  40.    does not include Plug-ins.
  41.  
  42.    If you are running Windows 3.x or Windows for Workgroups,
  43.    you MUST use the 16-bit Navigator even if you have Win32s
  44.    installed. If you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT,
  45.    use the 32-bit Navigator.  To run the 32bit Navigator,
  46.    you MUST have a 32-bit TCP/IP stack.
  47.  
  48.    Both Windows 95 and Windows NT provide built-in 32bit TCP/IP
  49.    stacks that you can setup.  You can also get (32 bit) TCP/IP
  50.    software from third party vendors like Trumpet Software,
  51.    and Ftp Software.

  53.    To obtain a copy of Netscape Navigator, download one of the
  54.    self-extracting executable files into a temporary directory.

  66.    to automatically start the installation process.

  68. * Win95 users, if you are using any versions prior to this
  69.   release, you will get multiple uninstall entries in your
  70.   Add/Remove program.  If you prefer not having multiple
  71.   entries, you should do an uninstall to remove your previous
  72.   version of Netscape before you install the new release.

  74. * The Netscape Audio Plug-in will only work if you have a sound
  75.   card installed and configured properly.  It will not work
  76.   with the PC speaker driver. Please check your sound card manual
  77.   to configure the sound card.

  79. * If you had previously installed CoolTalk Watchdog, then you must
  80.   uninstall the version you have and reboot your machine before
  81.   installing the latest version.  You might experience some
  82.   problems running Cooltalk with Matrox MGA Millennium graphic

  84.   running version 2.22.039 or above.

  139.                         Running Netscape

  142. What do I need to run Netscape Navigator?
  143.  
  144. You must have a direct Internet connection before you can use
  145. Netscape. The ability to send and receive e-mail does not
  146. necessarily mean you can run Netscape. There are three
  147. requirements for Netscape Navigator:
  148.  
  149.     1. A direct Ethernet connection to the net, or a dialup
  150.        SLIP or PPP account from an Internet service provider.
  151.  
  152.     2. TCP/IP stack
  153.  
  154.     3. Netscape Navigator software
  155.  
  156. You can get a direct connection to the Internet through a service
  157. provider in your area.  You will need to get a SLIP or a PPP
  158. account from an Internet provider (for a dialup account).
  159.  
  160. When you have full Internet connectivity, you need to have a
  161. TCP/IP stack, dialer, and WINSOCK.DLL file.
  162.  
  163. If you get the error message "Cannot find WINSOCK.DLL" when
  164. running Netscape Navigator, this means your computer is looking
  165. for the WINSOCK.DLL file which is part of the winsock package.
  166.

  171. The Netscape installer will overwrite existing OLE2 DLLs with the
  172. latest versions for US Windows. This will not affect 32-bit
  173. Windows. For 16-bit Windows, the only difference between the US
  174. and the Japanese versions are the internationalization of error
  175. strings. Occasionally, the Japanese user may see an English
  176. language OLE2 error message after installing Netscape. Currently,
  177. there are no Japanese versions available for the OLE2 DLLs.
  178. Netscape is working with Microsoft to make the Japanese version of
  179. the OLE2 DLLs available.

  182.               Information about the Quicktime Plug-in
  183. ==================================================================

  186. This part describes what you will need and how to use the
  187. Windows version of Apple's QuickTime plug-ins for Netscape
  188. Navigator 3.03.
  189.  
  190. WHAT THE QUICKTIME PLUG-IN DOES:
  191.  
  192. Apple's QuickTime plug-in for Netscape Navigator 3.03 or
  193. later lets you experience QuickTime content directly in the
  194. Navigator browser window. You no longer need a "helper
  195. application" like MoviePlayer to view QuickTime content with
  196. Navigator 3.03. You can also view QuickTime VR Panoramas and
  197. Objects inline, after downloading the QuickTime VR component
  198. from Apple. As a web developer, you can control the
  199. QuickTime playback experience through HTML commands. You can
  200. choose to have a movie automatically played for a user, or
  201. present a controller giving users the ability to play, stop,
  202. fastforward, and rewind.
  203.  
  204. The QuickTime plug-in works with existing QuickTime movies,
  205. and with movies prepared to take advantage of the plug-in's
  206. "fast start" feature. The "fast start" feature will present
  207. the first frame of the movie almost immediately and can
  208. begin playing even before the movie has been completely
  209. downloaded. The "fast start" feature saves you time waiting
  210. for the entire movie to download, but otherwise plays just
  211. like regular QuickTime movie.
  212.  
  213. Netscape Navigator will use the QuickTime plug-in
  214. automatically to play any QuickTime movie while browsing the
  215. internet.  The plug-in can play many kinds of QuickTime
  216. movies (.mov files) including movies with text, MIDI, and
  217. other kinds of data. If you have downloaded and installed
  218. the QuickTime VR component, it will also let you interact
  219. with QuickTime VR Panoramas and Objects.

  221. WHAT YOU NEED:

  223. * A PC running Windows 95, NT, or 3.1.
  224.  
  225. * Latest version(s) of QuickTime : 
  226.    - QuickTime 2.1.1 for Windows

  230. Follow the instructions on the page to install the software.
  231. The PC files are in ZIP format and you will need a utility
  232. such as pkunzip to extract the software.

  234. * Apple's QuickTime plug-in
  235. You can obtain the QuickTime plug-in by downloading Netscape
  236. Navigator 3.03 (http://home.netscape.com). Please make sure
  237. you have downloaded the plug-in that is most appropriate for
  238. the computer you are using.

  240. * QuickTime VR
  241. If you would like to view QuickTime VR (Virtual Reality)
  242. Panoramas and Objects using the QuickTime plug-in, you will
  243. need the QTVR library for Windows (QTVRW.QTC). The QTVR 
  244. software is *not* included with Netscape Navigator 3.03, 
  245. but you can download them from either the Apple QuickTime VR
  246. site (http://qtvr.quicktime.apple.com) or the QuickTime
  247. Software page (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  249. On Windows, the QTVRW.QTC file must be in the WINDOWS
  250. directory of your primary drive.

  255. cool software.

  257. * Netscape Navigator 3.03 or later
  258. You can download Navigator 3.03 from Netscape's site at

  261. HOW TO USE THE PLUG-IN:
  262.  
  263. Netscape Navigator 3.03 includes the QuickTime plug-in. When
  264. you run Navigator 3.03, the plug-in will be ready to use.
  265.  
  266. If you are downloading the QuickTime plug-in or the
  267. QuickTime VR components for the plug-in from Apple's web
  268. site, you must quit Netscape Navigator and move the software
  269. to the appropriate location (see above).  When you relaunch
  270. Navigator, the plug-in will be loaded and ready to use.

  286. FREQUENT QUESTIONS:

  288. Q: Should Windows users download the 16-bit or 32-bit
  289. version of the QuickTime plug-in, or both?
  290. A: First of all, if you are using Netscape Navigator 3.03,
  291. you do not need to download the plug-in, it is bundled with
  292. Navigator 3.03.  But beyond that,  definitely *not* both.
  293. Download the version of the plug-in that matches the version
  294. of Navigator you are running. If you are not sure which
  295. version you are running, look inside the PLUGINS folder in
  296. your NETSCAPE folder. If you see Npnull16.dll, you are using
  297. 16-bit Navigator. If you see Npnull32.dll, you are using
  298. 32-bit Navigator.
  299.  
  300. Q: I am running Windows '95 (or NT). I downloaded the
  301. QuickTime VR software (QTVRW.QTC), installed it in my
  302. WINDOWS directory, and rebooted. But When I run Navigator
  303. with the QuickTime VR component, I can't view QuickTime VR
  304. Panoramas and Objects.
  305. A: Currently there is only a 16-bit version of the QuickTime
  306. VR software for Windows. The 16-bit version will not work
  307. with a 32-bit (Windows '95/NT) version of Netscape
  308. Navigator. If you would like to use the QuickTime VR
  309. software with Navigator, you will have to download and use
  310. the Windows 3.1 version of Netscape Navigator. When a 32-bit
  311. version of the QuickTime VR component is available for
  312. Windows '95/NT users, we will post it on the QuickTime web
  313. site (http://quicktime.apple.com).

  315. Q: I downloaded Netscape Navigator 3.03, but the QuickTime
  316. plug-in doesn't seem to be working.
  317. A: Navigator 3.03 lets you pick plug-ins for different types
  318. of content, just like you pick helper apps. You may need to
  319. pick the QuickTime plug-in in the Navigator
  320. "Options/Helpers" dialog to make the QuickTime plug-in work.

  322. Q: I am using a Web browser other than Netscape Navigator
  323. 3.03 and I am experiencing problems with the QuickTime
  324. plug-in.
  325. A: Currently, the QuickTime plug-in only supports Netscape
  326. Navigator 3.03 or later.

  328. Q. I design web pages and would like to know more about
  329. movie controls and other capabilities of the QuickTime
  330. plug-in. Where should I look for documentation?
  331. A: The QuickTime plug-in provides a number of new and
  332. exciting options for internet content providers. Please

  336. Q: I am browsing a page with a QuickTime VR panorama and
  337. expect that I can use the option and control (shift and
  338. control on Windows) to zoom in/zoom out of the movie.
  339. Likewise, with a regular QuickTime movie, I expect the arrow
  340. keys to step through the movie a frame at a time. But the
  341. movies don't seem to respond to keystrokes.
  342. A: You need to select the QuickTime VR panaroma or QuickTime
  343. movie first by clicking on it. On Windows, the arrow keys do
  344. not work.
  345.  
  346. Q. I'd like to save some of the movies to my hard drive. How
  347. do I do this?
  348. A. You can click on the movie and press Command-S on the
  349. Macintosh or Control-S on the PC to bring up a "save"
  350. dialogue. However, this will not work for QuickTime VR
  351. movies. To save QuickTime VR movies go to the Navigator 3.03
  352. menu, select Options/General Preferences/Helpers, then
  353. select QuickTime from the list and choose Edit. At this
  354. point, you'll be presented with a few options, all will work
  355. for saving QuickTime VR files.
